“FORBIDDEN”: TRANSYLVANIAN BEER CHANGES BRAND NAME AFTER LOSING ROMANIAN COURT BATTLE

Transylvania’s under-fire “Hungarian” beer has changed its brand name temporarily from “Igazi Csíki Sör” (Real Beer of Csík) to “Tiltott Igazi Sör” (Forbidden Real Beer).

The popular beer producer was forced to remove the original name after a Romanian regional court has ruled in favor of multinational giant Heineken against the local Hungarian beer in their age-long legal dispute over brand copyrights. The trick is, however, that one can still discover the original brand name “Csíki” on the glass but only if he/she can read the alphabet of the ancient Hungarian writing called “rovásírás”:

“Csík” means “Ciuc” in Romanian language and refers to a small region of Transylvania with massive ethnic Hungarian majority. The ‘Igazi Csíki Sör’ has had similar brand name to Heineken’s local “Ciuc beer”, this is why the Romanian regional court ruled that the local company must destroy all of its products and equipment in 30 days.

The Romanian ruling directly contradicts an EU court, which ruled in favor of the Hungarian product and against Heineken last December.
