A Japanese film about the Szekely-Hungarian Rovas writing system (Rovásírás) was broadcasted on Japanese TV (Good Morning Japan), on January 10, 2010. The film was uploaded to youtube, on February 12 and since then it has become the most watched video clip, in the subject of “Rovásírás” on youtube.
László Sípos who worked with the Japanese film crew gave us some background information about the shooting of the video.
In early January, a Japanese state television (NHK) crew was shooting a report film in Hungary about the impact of the coming down of the Berlin Wall. At one point, during the filming László Sípos showed the book ?Élő Rovás? to the Japanese crew. The introduction of the book has been written in 45 languages, among them in Japanese. The crew was stunned to learn that a thing like ?Rovásírás? existed and decided right on the spot to extend their stay and make a video about this unique cultural treasure of Hungarian culture.
According to Sípos, the more informed Japanese are aware of the historical, cultural and genetic links between Hungarians and Japanese. Even if the average Japanese is not aware of this, he is always amazed when discovers new information about historical facts. Many Asians consider Hungarians as kins living in the European continent said László Sípos.
According to Sípos, there are tremendous opportunities in the Asian relations that Hungary should explore to the fullest.
According to Sípos, it was not only “Rovásírás” that stunned the Japanese but also the fact that the Hungarian government doesn’t support the efforts of those researching the thousands of years old writing system; instead, government officials try to hide it from outsiders and do everything to belittle and diminish its importance among the population.
The Japanese were also fascinated by the visual aspects of the letters and the fact that it is written from left to right said Sípos. Until about 80 years ago, the Japanese too wrote from left to right.
As a result of the initial contacts, new projects are in the planning stage that will expand the cultural links between the two nations. There are plans to make more films and publish Japanese books about the subject; also, participants are organizing a conference about Hungarian and Japanese linguistic relations said Sipos.
